| COMMENTS: | This puzzle is a groundbreaking and highly anticipated design. Only 30 copies have ever been made in the past, and Brian at Mr. Puzzle sold them out very quickly. The Ternary burr consists of 22 pieces, with over 90 notches and and grooves. The unique solution requires 75 moves to get the first piece out, and over 90 moves to completely disassemble the puzzle. A very difficult work of art!
Here is what the designer, Pit, has to say about it: After designing several prototypes, Ternary Burr was born. In my first prototype design, the ring pieces cannot be disassembled from the cage. Only the key piece can be removed. However, the number of moves to remove the key piece is 75 for a simple 4-ring version of the puzzle. Subsequently, Eric Fuller suggested that the cage should also come apart just like the Binary Burr. The final design allows the cage to be disassembled once the "ring" pieces are removed." Constructed of choice walnut and carolina cherry, the tolerances on this puzzle are excellent. Operation is smooth and crisp with little or no slop at normal humidity. Even though I applied the lessons learned while making the Binary Burr, crafting this design took all my abilities, and I am very pleased with how it turned out. I do not anticipate making this design again anytime in the future, since it took me over a month!! 38 copies made for sale, each signed and dated. Ships assembled. |
