The idea for the Escalating Box came from a couple of different mechanisms I'd been fooling around with. I was going to release them as two fairly simple separate boxes but realized that I could put them both into one trickier box. I made a poll on our Facebook Group and everyone overwhelmingly voted for a single, more difficult box. Done and done!
I got to the drawing board and realized not only could I put both mechanisms together, but that they would interact making the sum more difficult than the parts. Finally, just for fun, I added a third tricky lock before the final release move. Be careful what you ask for, facebook friends!
This is a fun solve, about medium in difficulty, and one that rewards progressive solving and manipulative experimentation. Construction is beautifully realized with a Curly maple box and several exotic wood options for the lid.

This box is very well crafted and nice to look at, especially with the Bocote lids, but also great fun to solve. It starts off easy with some moves that are not uncommon to Eric's boxes, and then quickly gets more complicated. Some parts of the mechanisms give visual clues about how to solve them, but then there are other parts making strange sounds and giving various feedback to the solver. A great combination of mechanisms not too easy, but it can be solved, and probably my favourite of the recent box releases.
I know this may sound weird, but one of the best parts about this box is the smell. That natural wood smell left my office smelling amazing for weeks. The top to this Bocote box is incredible. Top notch as always and a very tricky puzzle to solve!
A very tricky puzzle box designed by Eric himself. As usual it's beautifully made (I love the bocote wood). The box requires some thought and observation in order to reveal its secrets. I'm quite happy to have it in my collection.
