COMMENTS: | As I have mentioned, I really like three piece burr puzzles. Ray emailed me after receiving a copy of the excellent "Just The Three" design and mentioned that he had designed a somewhat different three piece burr years ago. He kindly sent me his prototype, and as soon as I saw it I knew I wanted to make it! It's a very interesting assembly, with three identical pieces and a coordinate motion solution. I know, sounds easy, and in truth it's not an especially difficult challenge to an accomplished puzzler. However, it's addictingly fun to play with the smooth sliding motion, and it's not quite as straightforward to assemble as you might expect. Non-puzzlers have a bit more difficulty with it, and it's a great skill level for a gift to a non-puzzler friend.
A quick note about this wood. I found an absolutely AMAZING plank of curly maple a while back, and it even had some nice streaks of coloring from the ambrosia beetle in it! Very rare find indeed. After milling the pieces, I culled the ones showing color and kept them separate. The amount of coverage will vary from piece to piece, with some having large amounts of color and some with smaller areas covered. No matter what, this is very unusual and rare material. Only seven copies have this particular material. These are precision crafted to exacting tolerances using some of my finest stock. I made this puzzle in sufficient quantities for all of my regular customers to be able to buy one. While initial orders are limited to one each to make sure there are enough to go around, after 72 hours you are welcome to purchase as many copies as you like for gifts. |
