Mechanical Puzzles and Puzzle Boxes
For over a decade Eric Fuller has been pursuing perfection in his Raleigh, North Carolina workshop. Exotic woods milled with unsurpassed attention to detail result in heirloom grade interlocking puzzles, packing puzzles and puzzle boxes.
Peter Hajek has put together a beautiful book. Even though I have been collecting puzzle boxes for 37+ years, I learned a number of things. I particularly liked his take on what makes a good puzzle and his brief classification of puzzle boxes based on solving approach. If you collect puzzles, get this book
This is a beautiful puzzle.
First there's the simplicity of its design. Three simple, no-frills board burr pieces that form the cage that hold a standard set of Soma pieces. That's it! The only twist is that one of the Soma pieces is attached to a cage piece, which ensures that there's only one solution. It's simply a design that was waiting to be discovered.
The puzzle's solution is far from trivial. This solving process is fun as it does not require a pure brute force approach. Careful reasoning will yet you, in several steps, deduce parts of the solution. There will be a few aha moments along the way. The entire puzzling process is a satisfactory one, and will give you your money's worth.
Finally, the puzzle is masterfully crafted. The pieces can move freely, but the puzzle is sturdy and doesn't wiggle. It also looks pretty once assembled.
quick sent and well-wrapped-in puzzle arrived without damage
Besides being a gorgeous and well-constructed book, Peter has done an incredible job combining beauty and information into an easily readable yet vastly informative reference. The book is amazingly up-to-date with recently released puzzles, yet runs through the origins of puzzle boxes with which many modern collectors are unfamiliar. This book should go down as one of the classic puzzle collector references, on the same shelf as the puzzle reference books by Jerry Slocum and Edward Hordern.
Very well made. When you figure it out, the pieces snap together in a real satisfying way. Happy I bought it.
The puzzle is excellent and well crafted! Not particularly difficult (for me) but clever with plenty of moves to discover. Definitely worth checking out!! Pic is the solved puzzle with its nifty storage bags.
LIKE THE PUZZLE A LOT. NICE CRAFTMANSHIP
A very fun and tricky little puzzle. Perfect size to maneuver the pieces and fun movements that were not expected. Solution provides satisfying moment when solving and at the very end could be slightly cheated with a rotational move, but would recommend sticking to the intended linear solve for the last few bits of the challenge. If you are not paying attention to how the pieces are removed it makes for a fun assembly puzzle as well, as there is only one way to put this back together! Great price point for quality and overall puzzling value!
This is a great little puzzle. The way it says "Nope" is fun.
Wonderfully made, very clever solution. Nice and easy too so not that frustrating with a really nice 'theme' throughout the steps. And as I said delightfully well made!
love it. thank you!
I really enjoyed the Nope box! For one, the woodwork is simply amazing! It has beautiful wood grains and I love the color contrast of the two woods. The puzzle was about a medium solve, which for me is the way I like it! I’m not a solver that needs to have a difficult, brain twisting puzzle every time I solve! As long as there’s a little challenge, or a new mechanism, Im content. I’m definitely keeping this one to display, sorry, you’ll have to find your own!
This puzzle is stunning. I'll admit I bought it for the aesthetics, but it's also a really fun packing puzzle. The connected top / bottom help create a really unique and fun challenge.
I definitely bought it for its looks but after playing with it I find myyself pondering more how to get those sycamore pieces in than how beautiful it looks on my shelf. A looker with brains to boot!
This is a very cool puzzle. The best part is you really can't get lucky to open it. You will have to figure all the right moves without any mistakes or you will be back where you started. I also bought the hip flask from cubicdissection, if you liked that you will like this. Also great price. Thank you guys!!!
